Google Glossary


PageRank™ (PR) - one of the methods Google uses to determine a page’s relevance or importance. It is approximation of the quality of a web page. (range 1 - 10)

DMOZ (Open Directory Project) - one of the largest directory system which is maintained by human editors. A web site listing in Dmoz is an important part of having a web site rank well in Google, because Google uses Dmoz results in it’s own directory.

AdWords - This is the Pay Per Click (PPC) advertising program offered by Google.

AdSense - Google’s marketing program which allows website owners to generate income from displaying relevant Google ads on their websites.

Google Toolbar - is internet browser add on available for both Mozilla Firefox and Internet Explorer. Features include PageRank display, Google Bookmarks, Google Account sign-in, Access to Google Docs & Spreadsheets, Google search box, Google Suggest, SpellCheck, AutoLink & AutoFill.

Google Cache - Google takes a snapshot of each page examined as it crawls the web and caches these as a back-up in case the original page is unavailable. If you click on the "Cached" link, you will see the web page as it looked when Google indexed it. The cached content is the content Google uses to judge whether this page is a relevant match for your query.

Google Friendly - webmaster guidelines which provides general design, technical, and quality guidelines for creating a Google-friendly site.

GoogleBot - The crawler Google uses on a daily basis to find and index new web pages.
